Best Places to Stay in Cuba

From colonial cities to pristine beaches: Find your perfect base.

Cuba is a large, diverse island. Deciding where to stay depends entirely on what you want to experience. Here is our comprehensive guide to the most beautiful and strategic locations to base yourself during your Cuban adventure.

1. Old Havana (Habana Vieja)

If you are visiting the capital, Old Havana is undeniably the best area to stay. It is the safest, most tourist-friendly neighborhood and, crucially, it rarely experiences power outages due to its status as a UNESCO World Heritage site and tourist hub.

Step out of your accommodation and you are instantly surrounded by history. You'll be within walking distance of iconic spots like La Bodeguita del Medio, the lively Calle Obispo, Havana Bay, the magnificent Havana Cathedral, Plaza Vieja, Plaza de Armas, the San Francisco de Asís Convent, and you’ll have great views of the nearby Morro Castle.

2. Viñales Valley

For nature lovers, the lush green Viñales Valley in Pinar del Río is a must-see. Famous for its dramatic limestone karsts (mogotes) and traditional tobacco farms, the scenery is breathtaking.

Travel Tip: While beautiful, you don't need a whole week here. 2 or 3 days is more than enough to go horseback riding, visit the tobacco plantations, and explore the local caves before moving on to the beaches or central Cuba.

3. Varadero & Surroundings

Varadero is world-renowned for its 21 kilometers of pristine white sand and turquoise waters. Beyond the beach, the area boasts dive centers, vibrant nightclubs, excellent restaurants, and an 18-hole golf course. Nearby natural wonders like the Bellamar Caves and the crystal-clear Saturno Cave are absolute must-visits.

Important Fact: Contrary to popular belief, ALL beaches in Varadero are 100% public! You don't need to stay in an expensive all-inclusive resort to enjoy the very same sand and ocean. Staying in a nearby authentic town gives you beach access plus a real cultural experience.

4. Cienfuegos & Trinidad

Cienfuegos (The Pearl of the South) is famous for its French-influenced architecture, the stunning Palacio de Valle, Castillo de Jagua, Rancho Luna beach, and the breathtaking El Nicho waterfalls.

Trinidad is pure magic. Walking its cobblestone streets feels like stepping into a Spanish colonial time machine.

Pro Tip: Because neither city is massive, both Cienfuegos and Trinidad can be easily visited as day trips from the Varadero area. This saves you the hassle of packing and changing accommodations multiple times.

Cayos de Villa Clara

The northern keys (Cayo Santa María, Ensenachos) offer incredible, untouched beaches. However, it's important to note that the hotels here are state-owned and there are no local settlements. If you are a US citizen traveling under "Support for the Cuban People," this area is generally avoided, as there is no opportunity for cultural exchange or interaction with everyday Cubans. It’s strictly a fly-and-flop resort destination.

Eastern Cuba (The "Oriente")

If you have plenty of time, heading east to Santiago de Cuba and Baracoa is highly rewarding. Santiago is the vibrant birthplace of son music and rich history. Baracoa, Cuba’s oldest city, is an isolated paradise of lush rainforests, unique cuisine, and cocoa farms. Keep in mind that reaching the East requires domestic flights or long bus rides.

Short Stays (4-7 Days)

If you are short on time, constant traveling will eat up your vacation. The best strategy is to base yourself near Varadero.

  • Enjoy the highest level of comfort and services on the island.
  • Be very close to the beach and major airports (VRA and HAV).
  • Do Day Trips: From your base, you can easily do full-day excursions to Havana, Viñales, Bay of Pigs (Bahía de Cochinos), Cienfuegos, and Trinidad, returning to sleep in the comfort of your coastal villa.
Longer Stays (10-14+ Days)

With more time, you can split your accommodations to fully immerse yourself:

  1. 2-3 Days in Viñales: Relax in the tobacco valleys.
  2. 2-3 Days in Old Havana: Soak in the history and nightlife.
  3. 4-5 Days in Varadero Area: Relax by the ocean, and take day trips to the Bay of Pigs, Cienfuegos, and Trinidad.
